Wisdom from the Word

Media Moment

Proposed Point (and click)

Last week's issue was abbreviated, but I still got some got some good comments.

As I've noted a number of times, I love commercials, so I would be remiss if I didn't point you to the site that allows you to view and vote for your favorite Super Bowl commercial.    Click HERE to 'view and vote.'

As we are inundated with election results and all the "facts" and guesses and polls, I thought it only fair to remind ourselves that numbers are only part of the story.   I was reminded of this old story and thought I would share it as this week's Featured Funny....

Several of my brothers and sisters decided to get their DNA checked. It was a lark. My family is a little odd and a lot bizarre. We sent our samples in and got the results back. According to the lab there was a 97% probability that we were closely related. Okay, we had a laugh. Then I decided to follow up on this.

After going through their menu got to talk to a real, live human. That be just an assumption on my part.

"According to your results, I have a 97% chance of being related closely to my brothers and sisters. Umm, I'd have to say the chances are 100%. Don't you think there's a flaw somewhere?", I asked/

"No", was the reply.

"No? How can it be no? I have to be related 'closely' to a brother or sister."

"I realize that. I'm not stupid. What the results say is that there is a 97% probability. That's a statistic"

"Yet, it's still wrong, isn't it?"

"No".

"No? What do you mean no?"

"No. No, as in it's not wrong. I said it was a statistic. The fact that you are related closely to your brother and sister doesn't change the probability."

"How can that be?"

"I can make statistics say anything, that's how".

"He who does not trust enough, will not be trusted."
- Chinese philosopher Lao Tzu

"[Most] blessed is the man who believes in, trusts in, and relies on the Lord, and whose hope and confidence the Lord is." -  Jeremiah 17:7 AMP

"But I will bless any man who trusts in me.  I will show my favor to the one who depends on me." -  Jeremiah 17:7 NIRV

Now, couple that with the above words of Lao Tzu, and then toss in the parable the talents, and you've got a very powerful philosophy of life.

I have long used both Jon Stewart's Daily Show and Stephen Colbert's The Colbert Report as a main source for national news.

So, it is only fair that I take this opportunity to share with you my "endorsement" of Colbert's newest book.   I think even if you do not agree with is answers to some of America's most pressing issues, you will appreciate his unique approach.   I am especially fond of his ability to match America's 'natural' resources with our growing threats (see his answer to illegal border crossing).

There are days that no matter how much I have to do, I just can't bring myself to devoting my attention to it.   On those days, I turn to the Internet for entertainment...and it never fails me.

Some time ago I stumbled upon i-am-bored.com.   I instantly fell in love and 'bookmarked' it in my favorites.   I was going to save this site for the a future issue, but just could wait when a home video was posted titled Seth's Mar Mitzvah.

I hope you enjoy the site.   Be sure to check back often, it says it is updated daily, and that is almost true.  There are normally new and entertaining things on the list on each of my visits.
