Proposed Point (and click)

This week saw the 45th anniversary of Martin Luther King, Jr.'s "I have a dream" speech.   If you have never (or it has been a long time since you have) heard and read this speech, I urge you to do so now.

Regardless of how you feel about the person, there is something to be said (good and bad) about the nomination of Barack Obama this week.

Now, on to something much less significant.

In honor of my wife's new favorite cartoon (yes, laugh now) -- Total Drama Island -- I want to point out that tomorrow (Aug. 30) is National Marshmallow Toasting Day.   So happy toasting!

I've taken some heat for girl bashing, and so I thought I would take the opportunity to give a bit of male bashing, so without further ado...

Top Ten Reasons Eve Was Created

10. God was worried that Adam would frequently become lost in the garden because he would not ask for directions.

9. God knew that one day Adam would require someone to locate and hand him the remote.

8. God knew Adam would never go out and buy himself a new fig leaf when his wore out and would therefore need Eve to buy one for him.

7. God knew Adam would never be able to make a doctor's, dentist, or haircut appointment for himself.

6. God knew Adam would never remember which night to put he garbage on the curb.

5. God knew if the world was to be populated, men would never be able to handle the pain and discomfort of childbearing.

4. As the Keeper of the Garden, Adam would never remember where he left his tools.

3. Apparently, Adam needed someone to blame his troubles on when God caught him hiding in the garden.

2. As the Bible says, It is not good for man to be alone!

And finally, the Number 1 reason why God created Eve . .

1. When God finished the creation of Adam, He stepped back, scratched his head, and said, "I can do better than that."

And one more--sorta...

Knock Knock!
Who's there?
A little girl.
A little girl who?
A little girl who can't reach the doorbell, stupid!

"The man who smiles when things go wrong has
thought of someone to blame it on."
- Robert Bloch

You will have to forgive me, in that this is less presenting wisdom, and more of trying to collect it.

I've said for years that Romans 8:15-17 is my favorite passage of scripture.  And it is, only I don't know that it should be.

When you go through the Old Testament, especially Proverbs and the Psalms, you note a heavy dose of scripture references, and an unabashed love for God's Word; but you don't see any overt preference.   That is, you don't read where King Saul says:  "You gotta hear this, this is my favorite verse!"   Jesus and Paul both rely heavily on scripture, but again, without any indication of favoritism.

So, am I wrong to favor one passage of scripture over there others?   It's not that I don't like the others, it is just that those three verses hold for me a wealth of comfort and inspiration--not that the others aren't inspired.

Let me do you one better:   While I do read the old testament, it is primarily in my passages in my "Through the Bible in a year" efforts each year.   The vast majority (we're talking 85% or better) of the time, my studies are New Testament studies.   I'm not really sure why.   I'm not sure that it is intentional.   It is just the way it is.   I do know that for some reason, the NT seems more relevant to me.   So, am I wrong to favor (even if unintentionally) the NT over the OT?

Here I am seeking your Wisdom for the Word.   Let me hear from you.   Oh, if you too have a favorite verse, let me know what that is also.

PS:   This will be posted on my mychurch blog also.   Feel free to leave your post as a comment on that.

Sometimes, you just need a little Mel Brooks humor.  And if you've already watched Spaceballs or need something different this is sure to fill that void.   While I doubt it is unfamiliar to you, I would say if you have not seen it recently, it is worth the $7.50 or so to get your own copy.   If my book, it is a must for every DVD collection.

First, let me say my use of this video in this issue does not condone this sort of 'sport'.   However, I have to admit that somethings are just too funny to leave unseen.   In this case, I would call it his just desserts.
