Words of Wisdom

Wisdom from the Word

Tax day is coming.

Don't get me wrong, I firmly believe in taxes.   I believe that people who cheat on their taxes should be thrown in jail.   However, I also believe that the IRS and the US Tax Code are both WAY out-of-control.

I'll stop here to avoid getting on my 'soap box(es)'.   However, consider this your reminder, April 15th is only a few days away.

Just in time for the filing of tax returns, I found a few things
that makes me proud to fork over my money to Uncle Sam.

"Dear God, I want to meet Ben Franklin"

A little boy wanted $100 very badly and his mother told him to pray to God for it. He prayed and prayed for two weeks, but nothing turned up. Then he decided perhaps he should write God a letter requesting the $100.

When the USPS sorting office received the letter addressed to God, they opened it up and decided to send it to the President.

The President was so impressed, touched and amused that he instructed his secretary to send the little boy a check for $5. He thought that this would appear to be a lot of money to a little boy.

The little boy was delighted with the $5 and sat down to write a thank-you letter to God:

Dear God, Thank you very much for the money. I noticed that you had to send it through Washington.

As usual, they deducted $95 for themselves.

"It is a good thing that we do not get as much government as we pay for."
-- Will Rogers

"Render therefore unto Caesar the things which are Caesar's;
and unto God the things that are God's."
- Taken From Matthew 22: 21 (KJV)

This is by far the most commonly quoted Biblical text related to taxes.   I've written and rewritten a blog entry on this text, but can't get it right.   I can't accurately capture my feelings and thoughts on this topic and passage.

However, as I was attempting to do so again for this issue, I came across this article by Marcus Borg (insert Star Trek joke here).   He is not one of my favorite authors--he tends to be a bit too liberal for me, but I've read a number of pieces by him and own a couple of his books.

The good Doctor (or maybe he would prefer 'the right Reverend') Borg has not captured my heart on this topic either.   However, he comes as close as I have gotten...and I'm feeling lazy.

PS:  For those of you who let me know that my "Good Friday" blog post was not showing, I appreciate it.   I have no idea what was going on with it.   However, I deleted it and re-posted it, and it seems to be working fine.   Somehow, I tend to mess up the easiest stuff.    I've also posted one of my old 'stories' as well--Damage Done By Display---enjoy.
