I
would be remiss if I didn't mention that this past week saw the 179th
anniversary of the birth of William Booth--Founder of The
Salvation
Army. Booth was born in England on April 10, 1829.
April (not sure of the exact date sorry) also holds the anniversary of the printing of one of Booth's most famous quotes. The following quote appeared in the magazine ALL THE WORLD in April of 1906. "While women weep as they do now, I'll fight, While little children go hungry as they do now, I'll fight, While
men go to prison, in and
out, in and out, as they do now, I'll fight."
Booth added to and refined this over the next years, and its revised (and extended) version has become a rallying call and battle cry for The Salvation Army since then. Happy Birthday, General!

In light of the news lately related to China and
the Olympics, I found this quote of particular
interest. Well, not actually the quote, but rather
who said it:
"The awakening of the people of China to the
possibilities under free government is
the most significant, if not the most momentous, event of our generation." - Woodrow Wilson
I've said it many times--there are some scripture passages that --for whatever reason-- 'feels' better in the King James Version of the Holy Bible. Isaiah 40:31 is one such passage. In this case, the difference is more than simply 'feels.' In my humble (often ill-informed) opinion, the KJV captures the intent of the author (Read: God) better than other translations. I can't even begin to tell you how much I hate saying this, but the only other translation that I really like of this passage is The Message. Well, and the Amplified Bible version, I LOVE that version of every scripture. What started me on this very popular passage was a TV commercial (you know love them) for Chase. You've probably seen it, the wife walks into the room and says the two most loved words in the English language: "You're right." and them something about them needing a new television. Cue the a rework of Queen's "I want it All" And we do. We want it all--I want it all, and I want it now. Our society wants it all and we want it NOW. Instant gratification is the name of the game and the reward we seek. All and Now. As I listened to a cover of one of Queen's better songs (actually sounding better than Queen), another song was playing in my head--the Youth Councils theme song from 1985. It was one of those songs where scripture is used as the text--Isaiah 40. The chorus (the only part I remember) was based on the 31 verse: "Mount up, mount up with wings of an eagle when you wait, wait, wait on the Lord. You shall run and not be weary, you shall walk and will not faint, when you wait, wait, wait on the Lord. Mount up...." I can't tell you how many times we sang that song in those 60 (or so) hours, but enough times that I still remember the chorus to a song I've not heard once since then. As I listened to "I want it all, and I want it now" from the world, and "wait, wait, wait on the Lord" from God's world, a chord was struck. In a VERY strange way, it was harmonious, not clashing. The difference highlighted Christ's path clearly. It was as though God used the opposite to drive home His message to me--my strength is only in Him. When I strive to have it all and have it now, I will collapse under the weight of want. When I wait on the Lord, my strength--through Him--is sufficient and plentiful to carry the load...and do so Joy. Sorry Queen, sorry Chase. The part of me that wants it all and wants it now has been handed over to Him who has it all--now and forever.
There is no doubt that as a people, we love to talk about stuff--what stuff we have, what stuff we want, stuff that "so-and-so" just got; the latest stuff, the hottest stuff, the best stuff, the worst stuff--stuff, stuff, stuff. This is not an American trait, but rather it is world-wide. Even in the most impoverished part of the world, I imagine they still love to talk about 'stuff.' The conversation selection might be a bit more limited, but... This 'talking about stuff' is the topic of the book Grapevine: The New Art of Word-of-Mouth Marketing http://listverse.com/ I had little doubt that I did "some" such word-of-mouth supporting, but not until after I read the book did I grasp what percentage of my 'social' time was spend in that activity. It was a real eye opener. The best part, the book is entertaining while it informs.
I am a bzzagent (yes, that's spelled correctly), and I have been since I read the book Grapevine One of the sites we were asked to review and commend upon was "The List Universe" I have found this site more interesting than the majority of the sites we are asked to review. In fact, I have bookmarked it in my favorites. There are so many lists on so many different topics, you can't read them all (no matter how much you may want to) in a single visit. So far, the most intriguing was the "Top 10 Bizarre Death Related Things You Can Buy Online" Be fore-warned the #1 item should take your breath away. No, this one isn't my favorite, but it does rank as the most intriguing, so far.... The List Universe is worth your time and I would say worth your adding it to your favorite's list. |
