Proposed Point (and click)

As foreshadowed in the last issue (8/31/07 in the 'Proposed Point & Click' section) I have started my Life-Goals list on Caroline Miller's website: www.Your100things.com .   At the time of this writing there are only four (4) of the 100.   I want these goals to be well done and meaningful.   I also want to reflect all 16 different categories the site proposes.

You can see my list by going to the (aptly named) "Rampant Ego" link on www.clmcgown.com.   There is a link there to my list in the McGoals section.   If you decided to start your own list (or already have one) let me know I would love to see what is important to you.   Of course, you will need to check back every once-in-a-while to see what I've added.   One unposted goal is to have my 100 things complete by the end of this calendar year.

I really hope you enjoy this week's installment....

The tradition of 'holy howlers' popping up in religiously related documents continues undimmed.  Witness the following sampling of bona fide bloopers culled from various church bulletins and orders of service.

  • The ladies of the church have cast off clothing of every kind, and they can be seen in the church basement Friday afternoon
  • On Sunday a special collection will be taken to defray the expense of the new carpet.   All those wishing to do something on the carpet will please come forward to get a piece of paper.
  • Irving Benson and Jessie Carter were married on Oct. 24 in the church.   So ends a friendship that began in school days.
  • This week's saints include a French woman (Teresa, the Little Flower), a Swedish woman (Bridget), an Italian man (Francis of Assisi), a German man (Bruno), a Jewess from the Holy Land (Mary, God's Mother). They include single people and married people.  Bridget was a wife and bother.  Mary was a virgin and virgin mother.   If they could do it, so can we.
  • This afternoon there will be a meeting in the south and north end of the church.   Children will be baptized at both ends.
  • For those of you who have children and don't know it, we have a nursery downstairs.
  • The Rev. Merriwether spoke briefly, much to the delight of the audience.
  • The pastor will preach his farewell message, after which the choir will sing, "Break Forth Into Joy."
  • This being Easter Sunday, we will ask Mrs. Davis to come forward and lay an egg on the alter.

"O Lord, help me to be pure, but not yet." -
Saint Augustine

While I never doubt scripture, I have to admit this passage specifically (well, the whole chapter) makes me waver.

I have done SO MANY really dumb things in my life, wisdom often seems as far as the east is from the west.   The vast majority of the time, it wasn't until after the consequences did the idea seem like a bad one.   I long to hear "wisdom call out".  I have no doubt this passage reflects and true and accurate word of my God, but this is one passage that I am yet to see.

Do you think it could it could be the 'volume' of my life drowning out the raising of her voice?   Could it be the brightness of my own desires blinding me from seeing wisdom taking her stand?

I've not had the patience to spend time 'surfing' through or around the Youtube 'channels'.   However, I have viewed many Youtube videos as they have been sent to me.   Others, like this one, come to me in person.   For this link, I give special thanks to 'Bill and Bink'; while they were over for dinner one evening, they pulled this up on my computer and I didn't stop laughing for ten minutes after the video ended.

Once you click on it, you may be tempted just watch the first few moments.   But trust me when I tell you it get gets better with time...take three (3) minutes of your life and laugh.

Urban Legends have a very long life.   They sometimes pick-up with whirlwind speed, stick like duct-tape, and last longer than the misery of a first date.

However, I have often used www.snopes.com to help combat or verify these legends.   There is a HUGE variety of topics covered.   However, I have to admit, more often than not, the "featured legend" is one I have never heard of.   I'm not sure if I'm proud of that or ashamed of how "out-of-the loop" I am.

In any event, SNOPES is a fun site and worth some time.   You may want to bookmark it for the next time you hear something, get a chain e-mail about a cancer patient, or whatever.
