Another week bites the dust. I hate to be too brief, but I am late putting this together this week, so....
Of late, I've had to spend a lot more time on airplanes than normal. On a recent (very delayed on the tarmac) flight, the plane offered the ability to listen to the Air Traffic Control tower. While I heard a number of most interesting comments, none where as interesting as these. I have no idea if these conversations actually took place, but I can certainly imagine them being real. Without further ado: Tower: "Delta 351, you have traffic at 10 o'clock, 6 miles!" Delta 351: "Give us another hint! We have digital watches!" Tower: "TWA 2341, for noise abatement turn right 45 Degrees." TWA 2341: "We are at 35,000 feet. How much noise can we make up here?" Tower: "Sir, have you ever heard the noise a 747 makes when it hits a 727?" From an unknown aircraft waiting in a very long takeoff queue: "I'm bored!" Ground Traffic Control: "Last aircraft transmitting, identify yourself immediately!" Unknown aircraft: "I said I was bored, not stupid!" Tower: "United 329 heavy, your traffic is a Fokker, one o'clock, three miles, eastbound." United 329: "Approach, I've always wanted to say this: I've got the little Fokker in sight." A DC-10 had come in a little hot and thus had an exceedingly long roll out after touching down. San Jose Tower noted: "American 751, make a hard right turn at the end of the runway, if you are able. If you are not able, take the Guadalupe exit off Highway 101, make a right at the lights and return to the airport."

I think some
things just go better together--for example: bacon and eggs, Abbot and
Costello, Sonny and Cher (we all know she hasn't been the same since
the divorce). Certainly one (even Cher) can exist
without the other, but they are much better when you have
both...together. The same is true of prayer and the reading of God's Word. In much the same way, you can read the Bible by itself, or you can spend time in prayer and neglect to study God's Word. But, when you put them together you get a dynamite result--much greater than the 'sum of the parts.' Here are two ways to integrate God's Word into your prayer life. For the next seven days, stop to pray before you open God's Word. Confess any sins that might hinder you from hearing what God might want to say to you from His Word. After you have read the Scriptures, pray again--asking God to apply to your life, what you read. Another way of combining God's Word with your prayers is to take your Scripture reading and turn it into a prayer. If you've read, "you shall not steal" (Exodus 20:15), you might pray: "Lord, help me not to steal today. Help me not to steal time from my employer, but put in a honest day's work. Help me not steal from my spouse by looking inappropriately at something (or someone) that would damage our relationship. Help me not to steal from my friends by saying anything that would hurt or cause them to feel badly about themselves. Amen." Your prayer can be written out or spoken spontaneously. Give it a shot, see what you think, then let me know.
I can watch the movie, but I can't fight my way through the book. I didn't even make it through the cliff's notes version. However, if you are interested, you can get the book from Amazon here:
My father was a devoted crossword
puzzle worker. In his later life, he moved to the
seek-a-word puzzles, but never fully left the crossword
world. I've tried them all, including the latest
craze sweeping the word: Sudoku (in all its multitude of
forms). I can safely say that I'm neither good at them, nor
do I enjoy them--they might be related. The only
puzzle I enjoy (and still don't always successfully solve) is the
Hidden Pictures puzzle in Highlights Magazine.
However, in those rare cases I get bored, I surf over to USA today's puzzle
page. On it I can find a number of puzzle variations. I'm particularlly fond of "Word Round Up". I'm reliably informed that you can even arrange to have some of them sent to your mobile phone--puzzeling while driving is bound to be dangerous. However, I can't talk about puzzle and negleced the "program people" in the world. I've found puzzles of all sorts to be a particularly engaging method to get people of all ages involved in the program/lesson. I used to use a Lotus 1-2-3 spreadsheet to create the puzzles--talk about a labor of love. Now this can be done in a matter of moments and for free. There are a number of sites out there, but the one I use most is Puzzle Maker. |
