Thank you all so much for your thoughts, prayers, emails and calls after last week's Friday (not so) Funnies. The "technical issue" was one of Internet connectivity. The "family illness" was two sick children which occupied my time and attention. But we are past both, so.... Before next week's Friday Funnies we will celebrate Thanksgiving--my favorite Holiday--and the official start of the Christmas season. However, as you might have noticed on any recent trips to malls, Walmart, or even your town square, Thanksgiving has been overlooked in lieu of the merchandising of Christmas. Because of that, I wanted to make sure these other "holidays" did not pass without notice. This list is just observances from today until next Friday. This does not include the more than 30 month-long observances* or the week-long observance. Should you want to see a complete list, the best one I've found is Brownielocks' list Now, so you won't forget... November 16 -- International Day for Tolerance 17 -- Homemade Bread Day -- National Family Volunteer Day -- Remembrance Day -- Survivors of Suicide 18 -- Married to a Scorpio Support Day -- Mickey Mouse Day -- Push-button Phone Day 19 -- Have a Bad Day Day 20 -- African Industrialization Day -- Name Your PC Day -- National Adoption Day -- Transgender Day of Remembrance -- Universal Children's Day 21 -- Pumpkin Pie Day -- What Do You Love About America? Day -- World Hello Day -- World Television Day 22 -- (Somewhat ironically) Human Society Anniversary Day -- Turkey-Free Thanksgiving Day (I guess that goes with the above) *this includes National Novel Writing Month, which my friend Bill L. is participating in...good luck Bill!
Personal ads that might well appear in your local Seniors publication:
FOXY LADY: Sexy, fashion-conscious blue-haired beauty, 80's, slim,5'-4" (used to be 5-6), searching for sharp-looking, sharp-dressing companion. Matching white shoes and belt a plus. LONG-TERM COMMITMENT: Recent widow who has just buried fourth husband looking for someone to round out a six-unit plot. Dizziness, fainting, shortness of breath not a problem. SERENITY NOW: I am into solitude, long walks, sunrises, the ocean, yoga and meditation. If you are the silent type, let's get together, take our hearing aids out and enjoy quiet times. WINNING SMILE: Active grandmother with original teeth seeking a dedicated flossier to share rare steaks, corn on the cob and caramel candy. BEATLES OR STONES? I still like to rock, still like to cruise in my Camaro on Saturday nights and still like to play the air guitar. If you were a groovy chick, or are now a groovy hen, let's get together and listen to my boss collection of eight-track tapes. MEMORIES: I can usually remember Monday through Thursday. If you can remember Friday, Saturday and Sunday, let's put our two heads together. MINT CONDITION: Male, 1932, high mileage, good condition, some hair, many new parts including hip, knee, cornea, valves. Isn't in running condition, but walks well.

Click for Larger View I was sitting in a hotel room this week flipping channels when I came across another story about some group's attempt to remove the Ten Commandments from some public place. I felt the reporter did a good job trying to look at both sides of the issue. The longer I watched the story the more irritated I got with idiots on both sides of the debate. It irritated me because those who where in favor of removal were doing so in blind ignorance of the message these 'laws' present to the community at large. There isn't really a down side to the message that they promote. Is there really somebody out there who would campaign on the platform of more lies, thefts, and murders? It irritated me when the interviewer asked a number of those who aggressively supported keeping the 10 Commandments, and none of those interviewed could name all ten. And only a handful could provide the correct scriptural reference. If it is so important to keep in the public eye, you would think you would know what it says. It irritated me when some promoted keeping the ten commandments in place because they were historical documents. While on some level this may be true, and on some level I believe this path may accomplish what otherwise may not have been accomplished--keeping the Ten Commandments on display--this debate makes be feel like I should be ashamed of the gospel. This is not some text from parchment swept from the floor of Philadelphia's Independence Hall, this is the message that God Himself carved into stone. If I were in charge, the world would be a much better place...for me anyway. Or so says Hallmark's great philosopher, Maxine. In this case, I have to also adopted that stance, if I were in charge this wouldn't even be a debate. Those who wanted to display God's word should and could do so without question or fear of persecution...wait, I think I saw that on some parchment somewhere. Maybe I should dust off my copy of the First Amendment and mail it to the Supreme Court, they seem to have lost their copy. Just wandering--Can you name all 10?
Thanksgiving, a
uniquely American Holiday. I thought it only proper to
celebrate one unique item with another. I think it
is fair to say that only in the US can you find a "Rock-a-billy" like
Hayseed Dixie.

Making every effort to celebrate the Thanksgiving, I want to highlight
a site that was just shared with me. To help you
plan your entire Thanksgiving Day menu, you can visit www.recipezaar.com
.
Thanks to Jason S. for sharing this valuable site
with me (and in turn with you).
As you make your menu, explore new options for future family favorite, or just click around, don't let that comprehensive, and easy-to-read nutritional information for each recipe deter you. One of the things I like about this site is the versatility. I can even type in what ingredients I have, and it will come up with a list of recipes I can make from my refrigerator and pantry. |
