I'm amazed at how many folks didn't realize the laws for Daylight Saving Time had changed.   Of course, you have the "smart clocks" which have this feature hard-wired into their program and can't be changed.  These clocks are off by an hour for another couple days.   You have computer clocks and PDA's that require a "software patch" so they will update at the appropriate time.   And then you have folks that have known "for all these years" that the last Saturday/Sunday of October is when you change your clocks.   And according to the fire departments it is also when you should change the batteries in your smoke detectors.   But alas, one of the accomplishments of our valiant, committed, and determined federal government was to change that which didn't really need changed--the rules for daylight savings time.

So, here is yet another reminder, on Sunday, (November 4) at 2:00 a.m., you should set your clocks back to 1:00 a.m..   This is my mother's favorite, because you get an extra hour sleep.   This is the bar owner's favorite night, because in most places you get two "last calls".  This is the weekend, when Sunday finds so many folks who normally only come to morning worship arrive in time for Sunday School as well.   This is a great weekend--enjoy your extra hour...even if it comes in the middle of the night.

One of my many amazing talents is my ability to sing the wrong words to any given song, and to do so often times in the wrong key...even when I am holding the song book.

When I do this (normally, 'loud and proud') my supportive wife often laughs at me. However, there are times when she looks at me with a looks that says (read: screams) "OK, you can stop that now." She does this without missing a word, skipping a note, or missing a key. We are an amazing couple!

With my fore mentioned talent in mind, you will understand that when I found this list I had to pass it along to you. There is little doubt that I will be heard singing these words (not always intentionally) in the very near future. If you are lucky, I will even be in fine form and proper pitch when you have the pleasure of my serenade. But until then, and without further ado....

Unwelcome Visitors

This week I don't have a devotional, but rather and confession and a request for guidance.   This past Saturday, a neighboring church was holding a "Trunk or Treat" from 2:30 - 4:30.   To give my three year old something to do and an excuse to wear his Ben Ten costume, we decided to walk over and check it out -- you know I needed the candy, right?

We arrived about 2:40, and all the cars were there, but no one was 'trunk or treating'.   We were approached by a man who said: "Everyone is downstairs in the church playing games, they are going to come out in a few minutes.   Do you want me to show you where they are so you can join them?"

I assured him if he just pointed me in the right direction I was confident I could follow the noise.   And off we went.   A few moments later we were entering a typical fellowship hall with typical "fall festival" type games--ring toss, face paint, musical chairs, etc..   Everyone seemed to be having fun, and I was incredibly UNCOMFORTABLE.

I didn't know if I could join in, if there were tickets to buy or get, who to talk to, I didn't even know a starting place.   Just as I was starting to wonder what I had gotten myself in to, my son noticed the face painting station was open, and he bolted for it.

I caught up to him as he crawled up into the seat, and I explained he was a bit excited.   He picked out the picture he wanted recreated on his cheek.   As the teenager started her body art work, I sat there wondering what to do next.   I said thought to myself: If I were in charge of this, I would..."  Then it dawned on me, I had no idea what I would do.   I had no idea what I could, would, should do to help a visitor feel comfortable in that situation.

From there my thoughts exploded into befuddled mushroom clouds.   My "hospitality" ignorance wasn't limited to "fall festivals", but extended to every aspect of my church life.

I have absolutely no doubt that I was taught this at some point in my life.   I am also confident that I have witnessed this process taking place by others who skillfully made visitors at ease--I have just never internalized it.

If I was that uncomfortable in such an informal setting, how much more so must visitors be in a Sunday Morning service.

I've got to fix this.   I need to know how to make those who visit our service feel welcome, wanted, and part of what we are doing.

Suggestions?

Special thanks to 'Frances' for passing this along.   I have heard the William Tell Overture thousands of time, but will never heard it again the same way.   Watch and listen to a person with incredible (though be it less than admirable) parental insight.    I also have to look at it as a glimpse into my own future.    Make sure your computer's speakers are turned on and enjoy a mother's rendition of a classic.
