Welcome to the inaugural issue of Friday Funnies.  Of course, as you can see, there is a lot more than just Funnies, but I trust it will always be worth your time.

Like so many things, 'funny' is in the eye (or ear) of the beholder.  I really doubt you will like the humor every week, but I urge you to stick it out and see what's coming down the road.  Of course, you are welcome to submit your own brand of humor.

In any event, I hope you enjoy this issue and I look forward to many more yet to come.

I just learned that some of today's artists are considering revising hits from the 60s with new lyrics to accomodate (and attract) the aging baby boomers.

We won't want to miss these.  They include:

Herman's Hermits:  "Mrs. Brown, You've got a Lovely Walker"
The Bee Gee's:  "How Can you Mend a Broken Hip"
Bobby Darin:  "Splish, Splash, I have Havin' a Flash"
Ringo Starr:  "I Get by with a Little Help from Depends"
Roberta Flack:  "The First Time Ever I Forgot Your Face"
Johnny Nash:  "I Can't See Clearly Now"
Paul Simon:  "Fifty Ways to Lose Your Liver"
Commodores:  "Once, Twice, Three Times to the Bathroom"
Marvin Gaye:  "I Heard it through the Grape Nuts"
Procol Harem:  "A Whiter Shade of Hair"
Leo Sayer:  "You Make Me Feel Like Napping"
The Temptations:  "Papa's Got a Kidney Stone"
    Abba:  "Denture Queen"

"Never play leapfrog with a unicorn."

This has been my passage for about three weeks now.

While many areas of Larry Osborne's book: "A Contrarian's Guide to Knowing God: Spirituality for the Rest of Us" really struck home with me, his commentary on this passage really sounded loudly in my ears.

I have used this passage for a couple years now to give myself permission to set aside my fears and worries--"...victory rests with the Lord."  However, I seemed to always just skip over the preceding words: "The horse is made ready for the day of battle."  By inference this passage places the  focus on us as "the horse" to make ourselves ready... we have a job to do.

I've read this little book from Jim Collins several times.   I'm a huge fan of his other two books "Good to Great: Why Some Companies Make the Leap... and Others Don't" and "Built to Last: Successful Habits of Visionary Companies".  I enjoyed seeing him in person (with 3000 others) at The Salvation Army's National Advisory Organization's Conference.  Anyone in the non-profit world (either in board or administrative roles) who want to apply the wisdom of these books to their not-for-profits, have to start with this monograph.
As I write this short blur, I'm about to start the last chapter of this book.   Before I saw an ad for this book in Leadership Magazine, I had never heard of the book or Larry Osborne.   While I would stop short of calling the book 'life changing', it's close.   I am already working it back onto my list of 'books to read' and hope that it comes out in Audio Book form.   I hope you enjoy it as much as I have.

"Well, we all have a face that we hide away forever.  And we take them out
and show ourselves when everyone has gone." --Billie Joel, The Stranger.

Those lines have always resonated with me.  I have found myself putting on different masks when different people were around.  One of those masks loves it when I visit Hot Topic in the mall.  I have a collection of (mainly black) T-Shirts from Hot Topic and add to it regularly.  If you have never been in there, I recomment it.  If you are not comfortable in close proximity to that many "freaky people", click on the link above and browse and shop on-line.

PS:  If you go, I highly recommend visiting the shop while wearing a suit.. it freaks out the freaks.
